Advanced Color Calibration: Pantone Huey Pro

One of the things that I am always conscious of when designing a Website and and designing shirts is to ensure that the colors I use will be consistent between the monitor and the printer. Now this is probably something that most people don't think about too often, but you would be surprised how important it is. That great red on screen comes out of the printer as a brownish shade, whilst that awesome sky blue turns into a greeny grey mush at the hands of the printer.

This is where monitor calibration comes in. Traditionally, the tools for calibrating monitors where expensive and a little bit cumbersome. Well I can attest to those days being over. Last week I bought myself this awesome little tool called the Pantone Huey Pro to do what I have always wanted to do, calibrate my monitor.

The Huey Pro is a USB device that connects to your computer via USB and together with the provided software does a number of tests of both your monitors settings and the ambient light conditions to calibrate and automatically adjust your monitor for perfect color.

The test is conducted by putting the device onto your monitor with its tiny little suction caps and letting it read a series of colors. It also measures the external conditions at the same time. It took all of about 3 minutes to set up and run the first test and end up with a very different view.

The adjusted picture is absolutely terrific. Whites are white, blacks are black, and all the colors in between are spot on. It has taken me a little while to get used to it, as I was obviously quite used to the old blue tinge screen.

It even sits next to my monitor and makes regular ambient light measurements and adjusts things accordingly, every few minutes. As an added bonus, when I watch movies and TV shows on my PC, the picture practically leaps off the screen.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is serious about getting their colors right.
